Is chocolate gravy a southern thing?

Yes.

I grew up in Mississippi and Saturday mornings were my favorite time of the week. Because it was CHOCOLATE GRAVY day! We’d all gather around the table with a huge plate of homemade buttermilk biscuits and this amazing chocolate sauce. Oh, man! What a time!

Now, many years later, I’m able to relive that memory. But, in a much healthier way. The version my mama and granny made used whole milk, butter, and sugar. So, not healthy at all.

However, with just a few modifications, I was able to recreate that delicious cocoa gravy without all the hazardous ingredients. And, I, along with my five children, couldn’t be happier.

How To Make Chocolate Gravy

Add the cocoa and whole wheat flour to a small nonstick saucepan. I LOVE my Green Pans! Whisk the flour and cocoa together and set aside. You can use also organic unbleached flour or whole wheat pastry flour. They work just as well.

In a small bowl add the almond milk and vanilla and stir. Pour the milk mixture into the saucepan with the dry ingredients and whisk or stir until the cocoa lumps are dissolved.

Place the saucepan on the stove, cook over medium heat, and continually stir the mixture until it starts to thicken and develops that gravy consistency. Finally, stir in the maple syrup, remove the chocolate gravy from the stove, and enjoy.

Made this with the vegan biscuits for my husband. While the biscuits are not like “what mama use to make” these were good and the chocolate gravy was awesome! My husband was excited and pleased with the results. He even had a biscuit and the vegan sausage party which are also good. When making the gravy if you will slowly stir the almond milk and flavoring in a little at a time until it is all used you won’t be fighting lumps in the gravy.

Does it have to be whole wheat pastry flour? If I buy a bag of it, it will most likely be wasted. Other options?

No, not at all, Janne! You could use whole wheat flour, unbleached flour, etc. It’s completely up to you. I would not recommend using things like almond meal or coconut flour. Hope this helps.

Will this work with oat flour instead?

    • Easy Vegan Chocolate Gravy Recipe - Shane & Simple (34)Shane Martin

I have never tried it, but see no reason why it wouldn’t. My only thought as to why it wouldn’t would be because the gluten acts as a binding agent. BUT, I would try it with oat flour. Worst case scenario is you have an amazing chocolate sauce:)
