Elite is a tier above most games. It’s a 1 to 1 scaled replica of the Milky Way Galaxy, and runs flawless with VR tec since the Oculus Dev Kit 1. I have so much respect for what they’ve accomplished, let them grab some low hanging fruit…
]]>Wait, SC has been doing this for years and loads of millions and it hasn’t even come out of Alpha yet, but if Elite does it..it’s bad?
]]>Well, They’ve updated with details with some of the ship packs and pay to win they are not; pay to catch-up is more like it. Both of the examples would probably take about 15-20 hours of play time (if like what you had to do) or grind (if you don’t want to do but had to).
More interested at the Engineering Changes (which won’t cost a thing), looks like they’re making it less of a grind and, thank goodness, because engineering can be some of the most grindiest grind you’ve ever had to grind. Even more than MXO and that’s saying something (as well as showing off my age).

]]>Kyle Orland from Ars Technica included this sentence in his write up of the change : “But Elite: Dangerous is five years older now and is seemingly looking at new ways to extract continuing revenue from a respectable but slowly shrinking player base.” The use of the word “extract” struck me because I think that’s what these big gaming companies are trying to do now. Extract as much money from a dedicated fan as possible. That seems counterintuitive to me, because sooner or later the shrinking player base should get tired of that. But hey…maybe that’s just me.
]]>The days of just selling a Box copy of a game and your done died decades ago..Welcome to the club I guess.
]]>These guys can’t get out of their own way since Odyssey.
Next: they offer the ability to club seals, accelerate climate change, and steal candy from babies.
]]>At least it’s cheap…I know Fdev needs money after multiple management missteps/failures and some layoffs but this doesn’t seem a great way to go about it.
I have no problems with starter bundles and even selling some mid-range equipment/gear/ships in games. My “P2W” position has softened considerably and honestly I don’t view folks buying basic/mid-range gear as negatively impacting literally anyone. But selling top-end gear as this bundle apparently does, and selling access 3+ months ahead of when everyone else can earn it is definitely not great.
While I still low-key cheer for Fdev in the background (know a few folks who got hired there and they’re great peeps…at least I think they all avoided the layoffs), this feels like the kind of thing that’s going to work out negatively in the longrun for a pretty minimal short-term payday.
]]>STO already does this pretty egregiously or hides them in gamble boxes. I guess welcome to the club.
It’s an unfortunate trend in the hobby.
