Hi,
I am relitively new to the game and I just earned my first Destroyer. It looks like to me after the Navitas, the best ship for mining would be another destroyer within the cost constraints of a new character and the lack of higher level skills. What ship would be recommended to progress to after the Navitas?
Thanks

I'm not really sure, but I have some doubts that a destroyer is any better than a Navitas for mining. Reason - the navitas has a mining bonus, and although destroyers have 7-8 gun slots they don't have the CPU to run all those lasers.
You may do better to invest in some miner II (after training to mining 4) and possibly some Coprocessor I to help run them.
I would also recommend that you make sure you have the skills to fit them!
Very good idea to train your Electronics skill as high as possible, too - it makes life easier regarding CPU issues, and just about any ship fitting needs high levels of this skill to get it to work.
Welcome to EVE!
Im assuming you are gallente. The best ship after the Navitas is probably the Thorax; space for 5 lasers. The only trouble is that you have to cycle the lasers in order to avoid filling your hold.
And lastly; look for info about jetcan mining, if you are not already doing it.

Would the ship progression you should follow if you aren't interested in mining heavily these are the skills you should work for that route.
Mining to level 4 or 5 if you have time
Astrogeogly to level 4
Frigate 4, Crusier 4, Battleship 4
Electronics 5 (highly recommended)
Engineering 5 (++)
And don't forget your learning skills in between.
If you decided to go Barge route.
You will need to get
Mining 4/Astrogeology 4
Mining Barge 3
And that will get you in a Retriever.
You'll need level 5 in mining astrogeology and Mining barge for a covetor, but after that its a hop and skip to get into a Hulk and 500 mill.
Also you may want to consider getting the mining upgrade skill as well and pumping it to level 4.
I apologise for the inconsistant style of this post but this is a stream of conciousness.

I would say that a Vexor is a good mining gallente cruiser, given it has a bonus to drone mining yield.
However it can only use 4 miner II (using co-procs), so the major raw mining output comes from the drones...and only works if you have good drone skills.
As stated above, the thorax is great alternative as it allows to use 5 MinerIIs plus some drones, but doesnt have any "mining" bonuses.

learn for the thorax 5x miner2.
and when you then want to be a real miner, go for mining barge.
when you want only to help your corpmates (corpmining), go for dominix and raise your drone skills.

if u aint got drone skills get the rax.
if u got drone skills get the vexor with 5mining drone 1s (unless u can afford harvesters or mining drone2s)

Train Minmatar or Caldari Frig to 4, then Cruiser to 3 or 4. The Scythe and Osprey both have mining bonuses 20% per level. At level 4, they will outmine a Thorax

In the short run, the Minmatar and Caldari cruisers are much better miners. However, Caldari cruisers are prereqs to Caldari battleships which suck for mining, and the same goes for Minmatar cruisers/battleships. Sticking with Gallente gets you a significantly less effective miner in the short run (thorax/vexor), but counts towards getting into a Dominix, which is an excellent choice for mining in less safe areas, as with moderate drone skills you can easily handle NPC rats.
Long run, if you plan to be a serious miner and presumably join up with an industrial corp, you'll want those barges. They're just that good.

Thank you for all the help.
Yes I am gallente, and with some amazing grace I started with Mining at level 4, so my Navitas has 2 Miner II's on it already. Thanks for the help though. This game is Amazing

Vexor or Thorax work out about the same, I think, the Vexor's drones make up for the 5th laser, but its larger cargo bay make it much easier in practice, as you don't have to stagger the lasers to avoid running out of cargo.
Don't forget the Brutix, it's a much more capable mission ship than the cruisers, and it can fit 7 lasers and a mining upgrade, so it can outmine the level 1 barge.

Actually, it can keep pace with a retriever, and can be tailored to fit the situation.
In High sec, 7 miner IIs & 5 mining drones will bust up some 'roids rather nicely. If I want to mine in low sec with no escort, I drop from 7 miners to 4 or 5, pick up a few guns, beef up the tank a bit and when the rats spawn I deal with them.
When your bored of busting rocks, with a re-fit to the same ship you can deal with most of the rat spawns you'll find in 0.0. With it's repair bonus, the Brutix may not be the meanest thing on the block, but it is one tough nut to *****.
IMHO, until your ready to shell out the isk for a Domi, or you have a tank around to protect your barge, Brutix is the way to go.
