I really hope that I see folks get the jobs they want and happiness they deserve this season. The majority of people do not have a savings or some also don’t have family to rely on as a backup. I also hope that wherever you are working does not interfere with your well-being. Having our livelihoods attached to a toxic workplace or situation is detrimental and feeling forced to stay in that situation for a paycheck is not right. Please take care and if anyone needs to chat about their resume or job search, I am here.

In a world where we allow tenure to dictate someone's opportunity, let the new person have a chance. The freshest perspective, the most recent education and the drive to immerse themselves in their passion. I remember when I was close to graduating from my cosmetology program and no salons would give me a chance because I didn't have experience. It got to the point when I asked an entry level salon if they think doing my mom's hair in the kitchen is experience because no one is giving me a starting chance as a newly licensed professional. My first job in cosmetics turned me down because of no prior selling experience, but I had all the latest technical and trending makeup application techniques. They called back about a month after turning me down and finally gave me a chance after several interviews and a behavioral exam. I ended up being the top sales person in the company for the majority of my beauty career because I spent extra time learning as much as I could, having great leaders who invested in me and utilizing all of our educational tools for my employees. In just one year the company promoted me to Business Manager, which I ultimately led my teams to success because my leadership team trained me and developed my talents. In this world where there are so many roles that say a college degree is required but it's administrative work that can be taught without a degree, or a master's degree for leadership positions is holding the economy back from growth. No one in power should be allowed to dictate someone's happiness and pursuing their passion. As a first-generation college student, the climb was significantly harder for me to earn a bachelors degree and here I am about to take on a MS in Marketing Analytics. Never thought I would be here today. I am so glad that someone advocated for me back then and gave me my first chance. That 10-year career opportunity happened because the "new" person was given a chance. Me in 2015, Clinique training seminar with the team! (3 years licensed professional + business manager)

How would someone know you made an impact on them without telling them? They won't! I have been practicing this in conversations for a few years where I let the person know I see their efforts, I recognize their strengths and appreciate their time. Those three things have leveraged building genuine relationships for me especially when this world can feel transactional. For example:Let's say my mentor takes time our of their busy day to meet with me-First I say, thank you for your time and meeting with me (appreciating their time).During conversation I let them know what I admire about their work. (I really admire how people depend on you when it comes to managing a project! Give direct examples of behaviors you admire or ask about tools or learnings they have used)Again, during conversation or at some point I recognize their efforts or I am engaged in learning about what they do. (You have spent a lot of time with the community doing x and your work is really impactful!)I know it's hard to put yourself out there, to write that intro conversation to someone you only met on the internet or saying these things in person. I have found it's worth it because if I wouldn't have, they would not know and they deserve to know. ✨
